About

The Wireless Weimar Project is about building a free wireless network in Weimar. It tries to connect people interested in expanding the community-based network, collect information and best-practices in wireless technology/applications and coordinate the efforts of the individual node-owners.
Wireless Weimar is a part of subsignal.org, a student initiative supported by the bauhaus-university's student organization [http://m18.uni-weimar.de/~stuko/ StuKo].

About this Wiki

In this wiki you can find infomation about

* the wireless weimar network in general
* howto's and technical help
* links to other wireless-projects around the globe

For an overview of what can be found here, check out the [[TOC|Table of Content]]. If you think you have something to add, feel free to do so - but please show some respect to our [[Wiki Guidelines]].

How to participate

If you are interested in becoming a part of the network, you can add yourself to [[nodes]]. Then you might want to join our mailinglist, wireless@subsignal.org. Send an empty mail to wireless-subscribe@subsignal.org. Meetings are organized sporadically on an unregular basis, and announced over the mailinglist.
141.54.160.62https://wireless.subsignal.org/index.php?title=Howto_OpenWRT&diff=971Howto OpenWRT2004-10-25T19:44:22Z
141.54.160.62: initial openwrt howto

Howto install the OpenWRT-Firmware on a Linksys WRT54g

==Introduction==
OpenWRT is a highly configurable firmware for the [[WRT54G]]. It provides different packages for diverse functionalities. This howto will cover the basic installation of the firmware, as well as some specific configurations.

===Other Sources===
There are several howtos for OpenWRT on the net:
#[http://openwrt.org/userguide.html OpenWRT userguide]
#[http://www.funkfeuer.at/~bernd/linksys-wrt-anleitung.html Howto] on funkfeuer.at, vienna wireless

==Basic Install==
The basic installation is documented on the [http://openwrt.org OpenWRT homepage], in the userguide section. In most cases you can skip the part about compiling from source.
#Grab a [http://openwrt.org/downloads/snapshots/ snapshot] of a pre-compiled firmware
#Follow the instructions from [http://openwrt.org/userguide.html#before_you_flash here]

===Install ssh (dropbear)===

How to add an article to a category

This wiki supports categories.
* An overview over existing categories can be found [[Special:Categories| here]].

* To add your article to a category, just include this tag in the text:

<nowiki>[[Category:Categoryname]]</nowiki>

Simple. :)

If you for some reason want to link to a category, without the page being added to the category, add this tag to the text:

<nowiki>[[:Category:Categoryname]]</nowiki>
[[Category:Howto]]
141.54.160.62https://wireless.subsignal.org/index.php?title=WDS&diff=888WDS2004-09-22T22:11:40Z
141.54.160.62: added information on WDS

Summary

WDS stands short for Wireless Distribution System. It is a mode of connecting wireless accesspoints on MAC-layer, forming one big network. The connected APs exchange information about the connected clients and respond accordingly. Amongst other things allows this for clients to freely roam between the APs.

where do we go?

'''the problem:''' in a growing wireless network there will be the situation that a node will have to be routed over a number of other nodes to reach its destination-node (multi-hop-routing).

'''the alternatives:'''

* BGP/RIP/OSPF - centralized quagga/zebra servers propagate existing routes
* [[Meshed Routing]] - a novel way of ad-hoc routing, nodes modify their routing tables independently
* [[WDS]] - Wireless-Distribution-System, all nodes act as APs and form one big subnet via WDS-Links
141.54.160.62
